“Casa Zalia”, Fuerteventura, is part of the small collection of private luxury holiday homes of the Zalia Retreats portfolio.
You approach the Casa along a lane, which winds upwards through the typical lava fields of the island, passing homes where aloe vera is farmed, where dry stone walls tumble down the hillside and where goat bells sound the goat herder’s arrival. The distinctive chimney of Casa Zalia appears and its white walls sited in a pocket of black rock stand against the brilliant blue of the sky.
Architect designed to maximise the enjoyment of the island’s climate and landscape with spacious outdoor facilities sheltered by the house’s own structure and the traditional dry-stone walls which border the garden. There are sun terraces protected from breezes by the design of the house and from the strong sun by a shady pergola. Steps lead to yet another terrace on the roof with views to the sea and Lanzarote in the distance.
The spacious living area incorporates vibrant furnishings with dove grey ceramic floors and signature white walls; vast windows, which overlook the swimming pool, allow reflections to dance on the walls. This room has a wood burning stove for any evening when you may want to be cosy, to watch a DVD, to play music or to simply make your choice of the available SKY channels.
The dining table in this room is large enough to seat six to eight for a simple supper or a more formal celebration by candlelight with white china, napkins and gleaming glasses.
The adjacent kitchen area affords a space for a casual breakfast or a place to sit and chat with the cook! There are all the necessary appliances – a large fridge freezer, oven, hob, dishwasher and washing machine. The view across the fields opposite encourages you to linger here, although there are several options for eating out in nearby Villa Verde.
Move a little further into the house, down a step or two, again overlooking the pool into a corridor which in time will showcase contemporary art works and currently offers a number of useful guides to the island. All three bedrooms open from here and are decorated with style but offer a degree of real comfort and seclusion. Smooth, white bed linen and silk taffeta curtains have been imported from the UK together with a range of occasional furniture. The largest of the bedrooms has an imaginative use of space. Large windows enable drowsy holidaymakers to watch the moon cross the sky (or to check on the prospects of the day’s excellent kite surfing). On a lower level, a bath is incorporated with a perfectly placed tiny window offering the bather a private view of the garden. Just to the left is the door to the en suite wet room, with rainfall shower and lavatory.
The second double room again opens from this corridor but overlooks the Casa’s pool. There is lots of wardrobe space for even a relatively luxurious collection of holiday clothes, a dressing table and a choice of lighting. A third bedroom with more than enough space for full size twin beds and side tables offers flexibility for families or groups of friends.
